The PARSTAT and Gamry potentiostat/galvanostat systems, part of SUNUM’s advanced characterization infrastructure, enable comprehensive evaluation of the performance of electrode and electrolyte systems in energy storage applications. The facilities allow electrochemical measurements in two- and three-electrode cell configurations. In this context, the following electrochemical characterization techniques can be used:
- Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)
- Cyclic Voltammetry (CV)
- Galvanostatic Charge-Discharge (GCD) Tests
These techniques enable the investigation of charge transfer, ionic diffusion, capacitive behavior, and redox processes at the electrode–electrolyte interface. The three-electrode cell configuration enables detailed characterization of the electrochemical properties and charge-storage mechanisms of electrodes and electrode materials, whereas the two-electrode cell configuration evaluates the electrochemical performance of the complete cell and its practical energy-storage behavior.
EIS analyses determine ohmic and charge-transfer resistances and diffusion characteristics, while CV analyses provide insights into the redox characteristics and charge-storage mechanisms of electrodes. GCD tests performed on supercapacitor and battery systems enable the evaluation of key performance parameters, including specific capacitance/capacity, energy and power performance, rate capability, coulombic efficiency, and cycling stability. The combined use of these techniques enables the comparison of the performance of different electrode materials, electrode modifications, and electrolyte systems, while also providing insights into the charge-transfer and ion-transport mechanisms underlying the observed electrochemical behavior.
