The study focused on the main efficiency loss in polysulfide/iodide flow batteries, which are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage. The problem arises from hydroxide ions crossing into the wrong chamber and disrupting the reactions. To solve this, the researchers designed a three-chamber system where the middle chamber acts like a filter, capturing these ions before they cause harm. This innovation boosted efficiency from about 78% to 91%, while maintaining strong energy density, resulting in a more stable and effective battery. The findings offer a new pathway toward developing more efficient and reliable renewable energy storage systems.
