A collaborative open access review article led by Kashif Maroof, PhD a NanoBio4Can MSCA Cofund Postdoctoral Programme Fellow at SUNUM, under the supervision of Rükan Genç Altürk, PhD (SUNUM Part-time Researchers), and co-authored with Ronald Fook Seng Lee, PhD (Monash University Malaysia) and Pınar Karacabey (Mersin University), has been published in ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science.

The review titled “Peptide-Functionalized Liposomal Nanocarriers for Targeted Therapy of Liver Fibrosis and Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Design, Mechanisms, and Clinical Prospects” provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in peptide-functionalized liposomal nanocarriers for targeted therapy of liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It discusses design strategies, receptor-mediated targeting mechanisms, and translational considerations, with emphasis on peptide ligands such as cyclic RGD peptides, GE11, and transferrin receptor-binding peptides. The review also evaluates liposome fabrication and ligand conjugation approaches, summarizes preclinical evidence demonstrating improved therapeutic outcomes, and highlights key challenges, including receptor heterogeneity, extracellular matrix barriers, and manufacturing scalability. Emerging directions such as stimuli-responsive and theranostic liposomes, as well as combination strategies with immunomodulatory therapies, are discussed as promising pathways toward clinical translation.
