Ultramicrotome System Training

Home > News > Ultramicrotome System Training

Between June 30 - July 2, 2025, a 3-day hands-on training program was organized for SUNUM technical experts by trainer Dr. Atilla Alkan from Atomika. Within the scope of the training, SUNUM technical specialists were given hands-on training on embedding samples in epon, taking semi-thin sections and placing thin sections on TEM grids.

The Ultramicrotome System in SUNUM enables ultra-thin sections up to 50 nanometers to be obtained from biological and industrial materials without causing deformation. The system has the ability to operate both in room conditions and in cryo environments between +40 °C and -185 °C. This allows high-precision sections to be obtained from different sample types such as rubbers, soft polymers, biological cells and tissues.

When used in conjunction with high-resolution imaging techniques such as electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), the ultramicrotome system enables detailed analysis of the structural and chemical properties of samples. The system enables the preparation of sections thinner than 100 nm for analysis techniques such as TEM, side-section SEM and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).

SUNUM's advanced technology and educational opportunities allow researchers to better understand the functioning of structures at the microscopic level and contribute to new discoveries and developments.
