Molecular weight controlled sulfonated Poly(Arylene Ether)s and sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether ketone) polymer blends for fuel cell applications

Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are a clean energy source for various applications such as electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. Commercially high performance Nafion® membranes are often preferred. However, due to disadvantages such as high cost, poor proton conductivity above 100 °C and high methanol permeability, intensive studies are carried out in the literature on alternatives to Nafion®. In this study, membranes with high thermal, hydrolytic, mechanical and chemical stability and higher proton conductivity (238.9 mS/cm) were obtained.

The article entitled “Molecular weight controlled sulfonated Poly(Arylene Ether)s and sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether ketone) polymer blends for fuel cell applications" prepared by a team including SUNUM researcher Assoc. Dr. Tülay İnan and Prof. Nilhan K. Apohan from Marmara University, who acted as co-advisors, and within the scope of PhD studies of Merve G. Seden from TÜBİTAK MAM, was published in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy. The research team consists of researchers from TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center, Marmara University and Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM). The other authors of the article are Dr. Emre Baştürk, Prof. Dr. Nilhan K. Apohan and Prof. Dr. Atilla Güngör. The article is dedicated to our esteemed professor Attila Güngör, who passed away while the article was being peer-reviewed.

We congratulate the researchers on their success.
